33 1/3

Zerone

33 1/3 is a 4-channel work composed for two computers and a turntable. Rooted in the sonic possibilities of locked grooves (the endless inner loops of vinyl records that trap the needle and suspend time) the piece explores the subtle instability of repetition.

Each playback reveals nuanced variations: groove wear, dust particles, cartridge inconsistencies, and needle sensitivity introduce unpredictable shifts. These microscopic changes transform the groove from a mechanical loop into a living texture.

Structured in an ABA form, the composition begins with a polyrhythmic interplay of pure and processed loop fragments. This gradually dissolves into an ambient expanse before returning with altered reflections of the initial material. Each performance becomes a singular event; an echo of the same material, never heard the same way twice.

Zerone Duo is an interdisciplinary collective founded in 2018, by two Iranian Composer-Performers, Deniz Tafaghodi and Farbod Maeen in Tehran. “Zerone Duo” draws its name from the binary elements of zero and one, reflecting the profound synergy between opposites.

They are translating visual marvels of geometric intricacies found in the architecture of various cultures into the auditory realm of music. Additionally, they use daily and ordinary sounds, often overlooked at first glance, as the primary material in their works.
Zerone Duo actively collaborates with various collectives in different mediums such as, live audiovisual, theaters, films, installations, contemporary dance performances, and animations.
