Farhad Fozouni (b. 1978, Tehran, Iran) is a distinguished graphic designer, multimedia artist, lecturer, and theatre director whose multifaceted career has garnered international recognition. He holds a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the University of Art and Architecture Azad Tehran and is an official member of the Iranian Graphic Designers Association.
In his artistic practice, Fozouni masterfully navigates the tension between the geometric precision of Latin typography and the organic flow of Persian calligraphy. He creates what he terms “poems,” visual compositions inspired by Persian calligraphy and the rich visual culture of Tehran.
Fozouni’s contributions to the arts have been widely recognized. In 2018, he was nominated for Best Theatre Directing and Best Playwriting at the Fajr Theatre Festival’s international section and received the award for Best Set Design for Flight Instructions for Captains and Cabin Crew. He was also awarded a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for 2012–2014. His accolades in graphic design include the STA Medal for Excellence in Typography at the inaugural Chicago Poster Biennial in 2009, the “Golden Bee” at the Ninth International Biennial of Graphic Design in Moscow in 2010, and the second prize at the Polish Theatre Poster Biennial.
Fozouni’s work has been exhibited in prestigious venues worldwide. In 2011, he participated in Graphic Design: Now in Production at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The Bethanien Art Center in Berlin showcased his works in 2012, followed by exhibitions at the Rietberg Museum in Zurich and the “Framer Frame” Gallery in Amsterdam in 2013. In 2014, the Fridericianum Museum in Germany hosted his solo exhibition Aftershock, and the UQBAR Centre in Berlin presented Can a Poem Commit Suicide? His recent exhibitions include Poetry-attack Disorder at the Azad Gallery in Tehran (2024–2025), Only the Morning Bird Treasures the Flower Garden at the Redcat Gallery in Los Angeles (2018), Situation at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (2017), and Recalling the Future: Post-revolutionary Iranian Art at the Bruni Gallery, SOAS in London (2014).
